No one else fascinated by this article?

I often read people post things like "Well if there are other species that are cousins of humans, where are they?" And the reply is "they are extinct".

Then the reply is usually - 'Well then why are we still here". Which is always interesting because if we weren't here we wouldn't be able to ask the question.

Here is an article that says we almost weren't here - or something like that.
