STATEMEMT
Unfortunately I work in the midst of antievolutionists/creationists, my community is thick with them, and having lived most of my life in Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Texas, and Mississippi (i have lived amongst them successfully for nearly 50 years). My family has historically strong Mennonite, Native American teachings weaken some, by my father's 30yr career in the USAF. Where i received most of my religious training in tolerance, acceptance, survival, and humor.
With my family's Mennonite history, i am lucky too in a strong family belief in faith, as found in Biblical scripture. My grandmother actually paid me to learn scripture as a 2nd grader (i am deeply indebted to her by the way). I don't mind Creationists or Antievolutionists as human beings i do object most strongly to their insistence to teach their beliefs to me and mine. We have our own!
I have seen their sect grow from a rare couple of schoolmates to a growing (and to me deeply threatening) social/political movement. That is threatening to place its religious beliefs in the schools that i, my children and now grandchildren attend and support. In other words i have had it with them.
I do not believe that the scientific approach will ever change these most intrusive people. While i accept that some of them are highly educated, and some even claim to be scientists of the natural and physical world... i find those i live around mostly poor, struggling, and not very well educated-certainly unable to deal with the science terms and logic, i find most evolutionists use. So it is no wonder that it goes over the heads of my poor neighbors! Most if not all of them have Bibles and can understand what it says.
This is one reason why i find the these forums so wonderful, it is a stress release for those who can't understand those that lack the ability/education to understand that one way isn't the only way. Especially when patient trust in Christ, his word, and his promise of salvation surmounts anything else in LIFE. (my Mennonite background, sorry)
How i deal with my coworkers and neighbors: Not for everybody but certainly fit for me.
1. Remember when in Rome do as the Romans do. I am quiet with my own beliefs until
asked.
a. This means learning their language as well.
b. i have to introduce my own language to them, so they can really understand what i am
saying.
2. Know your enemy ... they want to win me (you) to Christ it is their mission as well as is
inserting Creation in our schools.
3. i deny being a Christian- i do admit to be an imperfect human being (a sinner in need of
Christ's forgiveness and redemption) and forgiven by Jesus. Again this is their
language and they can understand it.
4. i read books that are way over the heads of my coworkers reading list. i do occasionally
read some books they really appreciate and shove under my nose. It is a great way to
practice #2.
5. i stand my ground politely, happily, and reach out to them after i shock them into silence
by using steps # 2, #3, and some yet to be listed.
6. i use the very same scripture my grandmother paid me to learn to talk with them ... they
know it, it is their language and i use it like the sword that Paul writes it can be.
7. When they begin to panic at hearing the Word in ways that they have never considered, i
stop and begin to go on with our daily tasks. (i redirect them back into what we are
supposed to be doing for the boss).
8. i attempt to practice at all times what i preach-God is merciful, forgiving, redeeming, a
respecter of persons, and my advocate after death, for my very human *Surely This Member Has Better Things To Do With Their Time Than Try To Bypass Censor Controls* on earth.
9. i rarely say 'the Bible says'- i normally say 'scripture,' it has a holier than thou sound and it
enforces my redeem status by Jesus in their eyes.
NOW SOME OF MY FAVORITE STATEMENTS
One must render the enemy weaponless, defenseless, and witless to win the battle.
1. Oh, i believe in a lot older Earth than 10,000 or 6,000 yrs old. Scripture talks about the wisdom, patience of God. I like the ideal that God is billions of years old- i feel He is really patient in that light.
2. Oh, the ARK (smile do we have a computer around i can use) It isn't on Mt. Ararrat. Since i believe in a very old earth let me show you what i believe is the ark.
http://donsmaps.com/images/gobustanscans/mountdjingirdag.jpg For an even better look at the whole area try the whole site at http://donsmaps.com/gobustan.html
2a. While looking at this remarkable natural perfect ark like mountain- i ramble on innocently about how this area was one of the earliest to make wine. And do you know scripture talks about how Noah drank wine! Genesis 9:20-21. Then i wander into how i believe the real story happened a bunch of drunken folks in the firelight telling tall tales to children to make them go to bed.
3. Proverbs 6: 5-6 as evidence that the scripture, is important to me only as it relates to Christ and his gift of redemption otherwise it can be as wrong as it wants to be. Especially on scientific things because science is a servant of God as all things are in my humble beliefs.
4. Ah, you're a "Come Againer"? You believe we are living in the last days, right?
i have learned to expect a yes. At this point i tell them i am a full preternist meaning I believe that all of Christ's and Revelations has happened and i am living in the "kingdom of God" this very minute and i am sorry that they are still waiting for it. Then i ask them that if they want verification of any Biblical predicted happening- i will be happy to provide it. i am still waiting. It is here that i am truly indebted to my very wise wonderful grandmother and my lust for cash as a young child.
5. If they are still dogging me i pull out the yet to be released publicly, material out of ABiT. Abram Back in Time a chronology of Biblical Times based upon Archaeology not Biblical Chronology developed by archaic christian scholars from the 2nd to 20th century by PJB Lotfinia. This rarely continues our dicussion as by this time they are my victim in this battle as to who controls my mind.
5. Continue to treat them as wonderful special human beings because to their families they are.
Understand they will return one battle rarely ends a war. |

My views were changed by honestly looking at the research. Until someone is ready to do that I think your efforts might be futile.
Like they always say, you can't win when talking about religion or politics. |

No, no, I'm still a godless heretic. But I do appreciate a good case, and you made one. |

Beloved Administrator, person to person right off the bat, my approach fails, granted. However, overtime by steadfast holding to my faith, and standing my ground some do change. The rest, at least cease to convert me which is a relief:) You are probabily right about most folks having to look at the evidence to change. That is beyond my ability to do for them, i leave that for scientists to do that. i guess, my parents own beliefs in god, and science reconcilation started when Daddy took to flying back in the 1930's.
The best thing i can say, is by sharing i am letting others of faith, and belief in evolution in, on how they may to speakup, and better argue for another understanding of Biblical literature, and respect for science. It is here Beloved Administrator that the greatest advances i see are being made and for this i am grateful.
Thank you for you comments |
